The third gen X3D technology-augmented AMD Ryzen processor has been announced and its name is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
With the huge responsibility of succeeding the popular Ryzen 7 7800X3D, this new SKU comes with a Zen-5 8-core and 16-thread config which is the same as last-gen at least in terms of numerical figure but the uplift of performance contributed from the transition of Zen 4 to Zen 5 is nothing to scoff at as the base clock is now higher at 4.7GHz and can reach as high as 5.2GHz for max boost clock.
The spotlight needs to be directed toward the 2nd Gen AMD 3D V-Cache design approach as well where the 64MB cache is now placed below the processor resulting in a closer distance between the CCD and the choice of cooling peripheral. Team Red is also confident that the new processor is ready for extreme overclocking by being fully unlocked out of the box.
In terms of official benchmark, the average improvement provided by the Ryzen 7 9800X3D places it at +8% against the Ryzen 7 7800X3D with selected titles reaching 2-digit gains as well as overall smoother gaming experience thanks to higher numbers in the 1% low range. All of these are provided through a fair 120W TDP and don’t forget, it has a total of 104MB cache.
If you want some beef, apparently it is “20% better than competing products” with the small footnote naming the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K. Well, we all know Team Blue ain’t gunning for the “brute force raw power” style of computing architecture for Arrow Lake but take this “AMD W” with a grain of salt until more reviewers come out with their own numbers (And that includes us as well).
