There’s one thing that we won’t have enough – and that’s storage capacity. Sure, most of us can upgrade our laptop or desktop’s storage, but we can’t do that on phones and tablets. To share files between devices quickly and compactly, portable SSDs have become the popular choice among users nowadays. They’re also very affordable.
HP P500 Portable SSD
The HP P500 portable SSD is one of them. It even comes in 4 different colors – and the price ranges from only RM199 for the 250GB variant and RM539 for the 1TB variant.
Unboxing the HP P500 portable SSD is pretty unique. The important contents are the SSD itself, a USB-A to USB-C cable, and also a USB-A to USB-C converter.
By having this converter, we can plug this SSD into our phones, tablets, or laptops that only come with a USB-C port.
The SSD itself is slightly smaller than a regular credit card and it fits just right into your palm.

The speed of the P500 series SSD is as advertised.
If we look at this piece of sticker here – it says the HP P500 portable SSD can go up to 420MB/s read and write. It is faster than a basic USB stick – but it’s not the fastest when it comes to portable SSDs. Given that the USB protocol used by this SSD is USB 3.1 Gen 2, so theoretically it should have plenty of headroom for up to 10Gbps of transfer speed. It is most likely due to the business decision to keep the cost down and at the same time a less aggressive configuration would translate to lower operating temperature. The P500 may not be the fastest portable SSD, we can assure you that this SSD is the most consistent. It doesn’t even thermal throttle! By referring to the piece of sticker again, there’s a free copy of Acronis True Image OEM software that can be used with this HP P500 portable SSD. It has limited functionality but it still allows us to perform backup and cloning. For this case in particular, having a redundant copy of all the data is always better than none – speaking from a content creator’s standpoint.
Conclusion

So here’s the thing about this HP P500 portable SSD. The one big selling point is the price. It’s very accessible:
- 250GB @ RM182
- 500GB @ RM268
- 1TB @ RM433
The price-per-gigabyte is the best for the 1TB variant, so if you can afford it – then go for the 1TB capacity. I mean, we’re all data hoarders and having more storage capacity is always better. That means anyone can now afford to purchase a speedy external drive for their computer, tablet and even smartphones, especially the latest iPhone 15 Pro series whereby directly recording ProRes footage to the SSD.

For Malaysian customers – the Shopee store https://shopee.com.my/hpssd.os is not run by Fusion Tech Supply Sdn Bhd. However, since FTS is a new distributor for HP, the warranty will be honored by FTS if there is the iconic yellow sticker on the box. Take note that you might find HP SSD Official Store on Shopee that doesn’t share the same price as what we have listed here. As far as we know, they’re from a different distributorship.
Interested customers can purchase HP memory products from resellers like Topmaid Computers / Asashi Technology. As long as the product carries the yellow sticker, Fusion Tech Supply will honor the warranty.
